Celent: What Vendors Need to Know About Its Research
Celent researches financial technology and helps financial institutions evaluate their options. For a vendor, working with Celent means understanding several distinct routes: research reports and vendor assessments, the VendorMatch solution directory, and Model Awards recognising financial institutions’ use of technology. Each serves a different purpose. Treating them as one route to recognition can lead a team to prepare the wrong evidence or approach the wrong opportunity.
Kea’s starting point is the buying decision. Which institution would use the product, for which workflow, and where does that product sit in the technology landscape? Establish those boundaries before asking to be included. A broader platform may support a relevant use case without being a direct substitute for the solutions compared in a particular report.
What Research Does Celent Publish?
Celent’s output includes technology research, vendor landscapes and solution evaluations, alongside blogs, webinars and other formats. Its VendorMatch platform supports market searches, solution comparisons and requests for information. For vendors, this creates several opportunities to make the business understandable: the analyst’s knowledge of the market, the published assessment and the information a buyer finds when exploring solutions.
These routes should be managed together while keeping their purposes clear. A directory profile is a description of a solution. A research assessment applies the analyst’s framework to a defined market. Recognition of a customer’s successful project concerns that implementation. None should be presented as a general endorsement of everything the vendor offers.
How Do the Technology Capabilities Matrix and XCelent Awards Differ?
Celent uses its Technology Capabilities Matrix, or TCM, to categorise solutions in vendor research. Its current customer due diligence and customer lifecycle management research, for example, assesses systems through the TCM and separately recognises top performers with XCelent Awards for Advanced Technology, Breadth of Functionality, and Customer Base and Support. A vendor should read the methodology for the specific report to understand what each finding represents.
Celent has also used an ABC Vendor View covering Advanced Technology, Breadth of Functionality, and Customer Base and Support. Published TCM explanations have used categories including Luminary, Technology Standout, Functionality Standout, Noteworthy Solution and Developing Solution. Those terms need the context of their edition. An older ABC assessment and a newer TCM classification should not be assumed to use interchangeable criteria or scoring.
The practical consequence is to prepare for the report in front of you. Establish the product being assessed, its geography and intended customers, the evidence requested and the meaning of any classification. A label gives a reader a starting point; the written assessment explains the capability, limitations and buyer fit that matter when choosing a solution.
Why Does VendorMatch Deserve Attention?
VendorMatch is Celent’s search and evaluation platform for financial technology solutions. It enables financial institutions to scope a market, compare potential providers and manage an RFI process. Its solution profiles include information about products, geographic presence and customer types. That makes a clear, current profile useful even when a vendor is not participating in an active comparative report.
Kea recommends reviewing the profile against the product actually sold and supported. Check the solution name, target institutions, deployment options and scope of functionality. Separate capabilities delivered by the product from those supplied by partners or implementation work. Align the profile with briefing material so the same product does not acquire a different description on each surface.
Keeping this information accurate and pursuing research inclusion are related tasks, but they need separate follow-up. Ask how the relevant record can be maintained and what research participation requires. A complete profile should never be treated as confirmation that a vendor will appear in the next report.
What Do Celent Model Awards Recognise?
Celent’s Model Awards recognise financial institutions’ effective use of technology through specific initiatives. The programmes include Model Bank, Model Insurer, Model Wealth Manager, Model Risk Manager, Model Buy Side and Model Sell Side. Winning initiatives are documented through case studies. This is different from the XCelent Awards associated with vendor solution research.
For a technology provider, the starting point is therefore a customer project with a credible story. Establish the institution’s business problem, what changed, how the technology was used and which benefits the institution can substantiate. The customer’s willingness and ability to participate matter as much as the vendor’s enthusiasm. Confirm the current programme’s eligibility and submission requirements before investing in an entry.
Kea helps assess that fit without turning a customer implementation into a claim about the entire market. The result should accurately identify the institution, initiative and recognition. A successful Model Award entry does not establish a TCM position, just as a vendor assessment does not establish that a customer project qualifies for an award.
When Should Vendors Approach Celent?
Engage while there is still time to establish relevance and assemble evidence. Ask the analyst whether the proposed solution fits the research scope, which studies are planned and what input would be useful. A recently published report does not establish a date for its next revision. Record what is confirmed and leave unconfirmed timing clearly marked.
Prepare a briefing around the questions that affect an institution’s decision. For an investment operations platform, that might mean showing where data becomes usable, which controls apply and what remains outside the product. For another category, the demonstration will be different. Use the analyst’s scope to decide which specialists and customer evidence belong in the conversation.
How Kea Helps Vendors Work With Celent
Kea connects Celent engagement to the vendor’s research agenda and relationship history. We identify the relevant analysts, distinguish vendor research from directory maintenance and customer awards, and clarify the right process for each opportunity. We coordinate evidence, briefing preparation and follow-up, keeping replies, eligibility decisions and deadlines available when the business needs an answer.
The immediate decision is which route serves the business: a clearer analyst understanding, a relevant vendor assessment, a more accurate solution profile or a customer-led award submission. Kea helps establish that priority and turn it into named actions. That gives the team a programme it can explain and manage before it starts chasing recognition.
